About this tour

Step back in time on this guided walking tour of Antigua Guatemala, operated by Ash Travel Antigua. This immersive cultural experience takes you through the historic heart of the city, where colonial architecture, religious heritage, and political history shaped one of the most important cities in Central America.

Walking through the Plaza Mayor and surrounding streets, you’ll explore Antigua’s most iconic buildings, learning about the Spanish colonial era, devastating earthquakes, religious influence, and the people who governed the former capital of Guatemala. Led by a knowledgeable local guide, this tour offers deep historical context while remaining relaxed and easy to follow.

This experience is ideal for travelers who want to truly understand Antigua’s past, not just see it.

Tour Stops & Highlights

  1. Palace of the Captains General
Visit one of the most important civic buildings of the colonial period. The Palace of the Captains General served as the seat of government and residence of Licenciado Alonso López Cerrato, the first president of the Royal Audience of the Confines, who also acted as governor and captain general. Originally a modest structure with adobe walls, tiled roof, and a coffered ceiling, the palace has witnessed centuries of political and social history.
  2. Cathedral of San José & Plaza Mayor
Explore the spiritual and political heart of Antigua at the Cathedral of San José and Plaza Mayor. Construction of the cathedral began in 1545 using materials from the former settlement of Almolonga after the Santa Marta earthquakes destroyed the original parish. Plaza Mayor was the center of civic life, while the cathedral stood as a symbol of power, faith, and resilience.
  3. Church of San Francisco El Grande
Founded in the mid-16th century, the San Francisco El Grande Church is one of the city’s most important religious sites. After suffering severe damage in 1565, it was restored and later became the resting place of Pedro de San José de Betancur, Guatemala’s first saint. Today, it remains one of the most visited churches in Antigua and a masterpiece of colonial architecture.
  4. Convent of Santo Domingo
Founded in 1542, the Convent of Santo Domingo once housed over 120 friars. Following the catastrophic earthquake of 1773, the monks relocated to Guatemala City. Restoration began in 1988, and today the complex functions as a world-renowned boutique hotel while preserving its rich historical character.
  5. Convent of the Capuchins
Consecrated in 1736, the Convent of the Capuchins was the last convent founded in Antigua and one of the most progressive of its time. Unlike other convents, it removed the dowry requirement, allowing women of limited means to join religious life. Its circular design and preserved ruins make it one of the city’s most impressive and visited landmarks.
